Sentence, clause and phrase

Phrase

الفقرة

والفقرة هى عبارة عن أكثر من كلمة وهى لا تعطى معنى ولكنها جزء من جملة كاملة .

الفقرة يمكن إعتبارها جزء من الكلام داخل الجملة الأساسية ، وهذا الجزء من الكلام قد يحتوى على فعل أو أسم أو حرف أو صفة أو ظرف  الخ

إذا كانت الفقرة تحتوى على فعل تسمى :

Verb phrase

وإذا كانت تحتوى على أسم تسمى :

Noun phrase

وإذا كانت تحتوى على حرف تسمى :

Prepositional phrase

وإذا كانت تحتوى على صفة تسمى :

Adjectival phrase

وإذا كانت تحتوى على ظرف تسمى :

Adverbial phrase

مثال :

A light brown jacket (noun phrase) might be having (verb phrase) sitting over there (adjective phrase) with my friends.

Noun phrase

الأسم

The crazy old lady in the park feeds the pigeons every day.

الفقرة الأسمية تحتوى على الأسم والإضافات المضافة له والتى يمكن أن نعتبرها فقرات وصفية أو ظرفية أو غيرها

Appositive phrase

البدل

Bob, my best friend, works here” or “My best friend Bob works here.

البدل كما نرى هو تسمية أخرى للإسم فى الجملة

Gerund phrase

المصدر

I love baking cakes.

الفقرة المصدرية هى فقرة تحتوى على مصدر الفعل كركن أساسى فى الفقرة(يتصدر الفقرة)

Infinitive phrase

مصدر الفعل

I love to bake cakes.

مصدر الفعل هو الركن الأساسى فى هذا النوع

Verb phrase

I was watching my favorite show yesterday.

يشير إلى فعل الجملة أى كان الزمن ويمكن أن نعتبر تركيب الفعل فقط كأنه فقرة تشير للفعل أو لفعل مع بقية الجملة (بإستثناء الفاعل)

Adverbial phrase

الفقرة الظرفية (تحتوى على ظرف)

He ran very quickly

Adjectival phrase

الفقرة الوصفية

Participial phrase

الفعل المُصرّف فى الماضى أو المضارع

Past participle: go went gone

Present participle: going

Waking rapidly, we reached the town in fifteen minutes.

Annoyed by the noise, the teacher spoke sharply to the class

Prepositional phrase

The food on the table looked delicious

Absolute phrase

The season nearly finished, Rebecca Lobo and Sophie Witherspoon emerged as true leaders.

كما نرى تحتاج هذا النوع من الفقرات إلى فعل مساعد لكى يعطى معنى بذاته إذا أستقل عن بقية الجملة

Clause

هى عبارة عن جملة تحتوى على فعل وفاعل ولكنها إما أنها لا تعطى معنى كامل (وفى هذه الحالة تسمى جملة مساعدة  dependent" or "subordinate )  أو تعطى معنى  كامل أو مستقل(وفى هذه الحالة تسمى جملة رئيسية أو مستقلة independent" or "main )

Sentence

هى عبارة عن جملة تحتوى على فعل وفاعل ولابد أن تعطى فكرة كاملة .

من هذا يمكن أن نقول أن كل  Sentence   هى عبارة عن Clause       وليست كل    Clause   هى Sentence   .

Examples of Sentences and clauses 

Ms. Jones is the principal of our school

Where he lives is none of your business

Birds learn to fly when they are young
