تكوين الكلمات المذكر والمؤنث
مثال : waiter, waitress
في لغات عديدة أسماء الأشياء مثل : كتاب book ، كرسى chair ، منضدة table ، راديو radio ومثل هذه الكلمات لا يتم تحديد
نوعها في القواعد الخاصة بهذه اللغة أي لا نقول هذا كرسى أو هذه كرسى، فقد تستخدم
كمذكر أو كمؤنث ، والنوع بالنسبة لقواعد اللغة لا يتنمى للجنس فمثلاً كلمة girl يمكن أن لا
تكون كلمة مؤنثة في تلك اللغات ، وكلمة chair يمكن أن تكون مؤنثة.
في اللغة الإنجليزية لا يستخدم النوع لتحديد القاعدة اللغوية، ولكننا
نستخدم الضمير he و she للإشارة إلى الأشخاص، والضمير it للإشارة إلى الأشياء، والقاعدة اللغوية مع
الضمائر الثلاثة he, she, it
قاعدة واحدة في الأزمنة والتركيبات اللغوية.
في اللغة الإنجليزية الضمير فقط وليس الأسم هو الذى يشير إلى المذكر أو
المؤنث أو هو الذى يحدد ما نشير إليه مذكر أو مؤنث، تأمل المثال التالى :
He is
the person you spoke to.
She
is the person you spoke to.
نلاحظ في المثالين الضمير he و she يشيران إلى شخص ولكن معرفة نوع
هذا الشخص عرفناها بالضمير وليس بالأسم ففي المثال الأول كلمة person
كلمة مذكرة لأن الضمير مذكر وفى المثال الثانى
تشير إلى مؤنث أو المقصود بها مؤنث لأن الضمير مؤنث.
ولكن لا زال لدينا أيضاً بعض أشكال الأسم المذكر أو المؤنث في اللغة
الإنجليزية أي هناك أسماء تشير إلى المذكر وأسماء تشير إلى المؤنث، ومثال ذلك كلمة
man رجل والتي تشير إلى المذكر وكلمة woman أمرآة التي تشير إلى المؤنث.
وبالنسبة للاسماء يمكن إضافة النهاية ess للأسم
المذكر لجعله مؤنث مثل كلمة waiter بمعنى جرسون ، إذا أضفنا إليها
النهاية ess
أصبحت مؤثنة waitress أي جرسونة . وأيضاً كلمة أسد lion إذا أضفنا
إليها النهاية ess أصبحت lioness والتي تشير إلى أنثى الأسد
(لبؤة)
بالنسبة للأشخاص فالنهاية ess لتحويل الأسم المذكر إلى مؤثت
أصبحت نادرة الأستخدام أي أنها تستخدم في كلمات قليلة جداً (وقد كانت مستخدمة
بكثرة في الإنجليزية قديما old English)
فمثلاً كلمات مثل author مؤلف أو manager مدير تشير إلى الجنسين أي يمكن إستخدامها
للإشارة إلى المذكر أو للإشارة إلى المؤنث.

تحديد المذكر والمؤنث من خلال
الضمير هو/ هي (هو طالب، هي طالبة)
هناك بعض الكلمات في اللغة الإنجليزية التي تشير صراحة إلى النوع مثل كلمة man وكلمة woman ولكن في كثير من الأحيان لا يمكن تحديد النوع أي
تحديد نوع الكلمة إلا عند معرفة الضمير الذى يشير إلى هذه الكلمة، فإذا كان الضمير
مذكر فالكلمة مذكر وإذا كان الضمير مؤنث فالكلمة مؤنثة.
فمثلاً كلمة جار neighbour لا يمكن أن نعرف هل تشير إلى مذكر أم مؤنث إلا
من خلال الضمير كما في الأمثلة التالية:
My neighbour has just bought a new shed for his
garden.
My neighbour is always telling us about her
famous son.
من خلال ضمير الملكية عرفنا نوع الجار في المثالين، في المثال الأول الجار
لوجود الضمير his وفى المثال الثانى جارة لوجودة الضمير her
والجدول التالى يوضح قائمة بالأسماء التي يمكن أن نعرف نوعها إلا من خلال
الضمير الذى يستخدم معها، أي من خلال الضمير نحدد إذا كانت الكلمة تشير إلى مذكر
أو إلى مؤنث :
