المفرد والجمع

Collective nouns followed by singular or plural verbs: 'government'

أسماء المجموعات المتبوعة بفعل مفرد أو جمع

كلمات مثل family, government تعتبر اسماء مجموعات لأنها تشير إلى مجموعة بداخلها

يمكن أن نستخدم فعل مفرد أو جمع مع الأسماء المفردة التى تشير إلى مجموعات مثل :

Company committee, family, government, and jury

What will you be doing while the family is (or are) on a holiday?

هذه الأسماء ايضاً لها جموع منتظمة حسب نهايتها :

Many families are in need of help.

يمكن أيضاً أن نستخدم فعل فى المفرد أو الجمع مع أسماء مثل :

The majority, the public, the youth of today

The public want (or wants) to know how they are (or it is) governed.

هذه الأسماء ليس لها جمع منتظم فلا نقول : the publics

نستخدم افعال فى الجمع فقط مع اسماء مثل :

cattle, the military, people, the police and vermin

فنقول :

There are too many people in the world.

ولا نقول :

There is too many people in the world.

أو

There are too many peoples.

هذه الأسماء ليس لها جمع منتظم ولكن لاحظ أن كلمة peoples ليست هى جمع people  ولكنها كلمة أخرى تعنى الشعوب

The peoples of the Arab World have a common language.

Nouns with a plural form + singular or plural verbs: 'acoustics'

الأسماء التى شكلها جمع وتأخذ فعل فى المفرد أو الجمع مثل كلمة acoustics

الأسماء المنتهية بـ ics مثل :

athletics, gymnastics, linguistics, mathematics (maths) and physics

تأخذ فعل مفرد

Mathematics is not the most popular school subject.(not are)

الكلمات - acoustics, economics, phonetics and statistics تأخذ فعل مفرد إذا كانت تشير المواد الدراسية الاكاديمية فنقول :

Statistics is a branch of economics.

فكلمة Statistics  معناها "الإحصاء" وهى مادة دراسية وليس المقصود بها هنا "الإحصائيات"

ولكن إذا أشارت إلى معناها الحقيقى أو إلى شئ محدد تأخذ فعل فى الجمع :

Your statistics are unreliable.

الأسماء مثل  crossroads, headquarters, kennels, series, species and works (= factory)تأخذ فعل فى المفرد إذا كانت تشير إلى شئ واحد مثل :

This species of moth is rare.

فكلمة species  معناها قبيلة

ولكن إذا أشارت إلى الجمع تأخذ فعل فى الجمع مثل :

There are thousands of species.

كلمة species تعنى فصائل

Nouns with a plural form + plural verbs: 'trousers

الأسماء التى شكلها جمع وتأخذ فعل جمع مثل كلمة trousers

هذه الأسماء لها شكل جمع وتأخذ فعل جمع وهى :

es (= spectacles), jeans, pants, pliers, pyjamas, scissors, shorts, tights, trousers:

My trousers are torn.

جمع هذه الأسماء تأتى معها a pair of  زوج من :

I bought a pair of shorts yesterday and two pairs of trousers.

الأسماء التالية جمع فى شكلها وتأخذ فعل فى الجمع ولا تأخذ a pair of  مثل :

belongings, brains (= intellect), clothes, congratulations, earnings, goods, manners, stairs:

Were those clothes expensive?
